The Wiltshire market town of Marlborough, on the River Kennet, is situated 5 miles from Silbury Hill. Baily’s Racing Register first provided detailed results from races held at Marlborough on Saturday 11th August 1731 when the 50 Guineas Purse was won by Mr Tuting’s Cinder-Wench on Marlborough Common. Over a century later the meeting on Tuesday 1st August 1842 was Stewarded by Lord Ernest Bruce, when the Savernake Forest Stakes was won by Mr Jones’ The Corsair, defeating Young Lochinvar and Montzuma. After racing a splendid Ordinary was served at the Angel Inn by host Mr Shepherd. The Sporting Magazine of 1846 recorded results from a meeting on Friday 7th August 1846 when the Town Stakes went to Carissima, the Members’ Plate to the thought provoking Cameleopard, and the Savernake Forest Stakes to Buttress. The final meeting took place on Friday 25th July 1862, concluding with the Town Selling Stakes which was won by Mr J Rickaby’s Dispute, getting the better of Vedette and Princess Vocqsal. A special meeting was held on Marlborough Common on Monday 14th June 1886, although the card allowed half breds and ponies to compete.
